mend it... on a Monday

Hi Reader,

Today in the US, we are observing Labor Day and I thought this would be the perfect time to share the 2nd episode of craft.dance.read.repeat which is all about mending.

Making clothes last and being a conscious consumer of textiles has become a core value of mine over the last decade. And the more I learn, the more I want to practice mending, making my own clothes, thrifting, and shopping ethically and sustainably.

The fashion industry employs over 60 million factory workers (mostly women) and less than 2% of them earn a living wage. People are making our clothes. And those people are often working in terribly conditions for not enough money.

Then those clothes (17 million tons annually in the US alone) end up in landfills. Even (over 80% of) donated clothing ends up in the trash.

The fashion industry needs a LOT of changes to make it a better place for workers and for the environment. It often doesn't feel like there's much I can do to make an impact.

But there are 2 things I CAN do, and if lots of us start doing them then the impact will be so much greater. They are:

  • Buy less
  • Use what I own for longer

To make my clothes last longer, I do my best to repair when I can.

Pop on over to YouTube and watch me get 4 (!!!) items out of the mending basket and back into the wardrobe.

Yours in creativity,

Jen

It's a challenging question to answer, and I'm doing my best not to rush into a hundred new projects before truly reflecting on whether or not I really want to be doing those projects......

This event is SO FUN. There's drinks, there's snacks, and Lucy teaches an upbeat ALL LEVELS jazzy dance class. Last time they did this I brought a friend who had a BLAST... and then I found out she had never taken a dance class before. Seriously. It's so much...

Hi Reader, I'm popping into your inbox with some very exciting DANCE news today! Starting this month, I'm teaming up with the dance program at McFetridge Sports Center to teach a series of Adaptive Dance classes for kids ages 6-10 with physical disabilities. This is the dance program I took my tap class through in the spring (and performed in the recital too!). After the session ended, I reached out to Tiffani, the program director, to ask if they'd be interested in having me teach an...
